Statement by Startup Foundation: The section on immigration in the new government programme needs to be reconsidered
The proposed immigration changes in the new government programme have caused great concern within our Foundation, its organizations and team members as well as within the international talent and startup ecosystem in Finland. The proposed changes pose a significant threat to the Finnish startup ecosystem and the country's ability to attract and retain highly skilled international talent.
We urge that the section on immigration in the new government programme should be reconsidered.
The most alarming aspect of the proposed changes is the requirement for migrants to leave the country if they have not been offered new employment within three months of being laid off. This three-month timeframe is significantly too short, as many recruitment processes take longer than a month, and for highly skilled jobs, it can take even longer. It is becoming increasingly difficult for highly skilled immigrants with families in Finland to find work matching their expertise, and many are already leaving due to this issue. With a 3-month exit mark, this number will only increase.
We urge for a more inclusive and diverse Finland, where highly skilled international talent is welcomed and supported. This is essential for individuals but also for creating a flourishing country that remains competitive in the global market.
